The waif-like British actress Keira Knightley has experienced a meteoric rise to fame starring in films
as King Arthur,
Bend It Like Beckham, Love Actually, Pride
and Prejudice and Atonement.
Her three Pirates of the Caribbean movies were released between 2003 and 2007. Starring alongside heartthrob Orlando Bloom, they catapulted the London-born actress to the Hollywood A list and earned her untold millions.
Both Keira's parents were actors and she made her TV debut at the age of seven. Her father was stage actor Will Knightley, who'd make the occasional foray into television, such as starring as Mr Glegg in the BBC's 1997 production of The Mill On The Floss. Her Ayrshire-born mother, Sharman MacDonald, had also been a stage and TV actress (she once appeared in Shoestring). Having joined the Drama Society at Edinburgh University in 1972, she worked as a go-go dancer to pay her Drama School fees, but was largely unsuccessful in her acting career because of stage fright.

Quotation: "At the end of the two days it was time for me to jump off, and Gore (the director) said to me, 'you don't actually have to jump off, I can get a stunt girl to do that. But I told him: 'I've been standing up here terrified for two days, there is no way I'm not jumping off!' So I jumped off the plank, and I got a big pirate cheer at the end from all the guys, which was a very big compliment."
